Architecture, Light, and the Art of Simplicity

Juli's House occupies a secluded plot where the island's interior rhythm slows to a meditative pace. The structure itself is a study in restraint: clean-lined pavilions with floor-to-ceiling glass doors, terrazzo floors that extend seamlessly from interior to exterior, and a palette drawn from volcanic stone and bleached teak. Light moves through the rooms with intention, marking the hours in shifting patterns across white-rendered walls.

The property sits within a quiet enclave favored by long-term residents and creative professionals who value proximity to cultural hubs without the saturation of tourist corridors. Within a ten-minute drive you'll reach artisan workshops, organic markets, and coastline known more for its surf breaks than its sunbeds. The surrounding lanes are lined with family-run warungs, textile studios, and the kind of galleries that don't announce themselves with signage.

Juli designed this house as a counterpoint to the ornate traditionalism often associated with Balinese hospitality. Instead, the focus is on spatial clarity: high ceilings, cross-ventilation, and furnishings selected for form and function rather than decoration. The outdoor pavilion features a daybed suspended beneath a thatched canopy, positioned to capture the prevailing breeze. The kitchen is equipped for serious cooking, with stone countertops, a four-burner gas range, and glassware that suggests evening rituals rather than hasty breakfasts.

This is a house that rewards slow mornings and long dinners. It suits couples who value privacy, readers, remote workers with deadlines, and anyone seeking temporary removal from the accelerated pace of modern travel. There are no staff on-site, no predetermined schedules, and no assumptions about how you should spend your time. The house simply provides the conditions for whatever experience you choose to create.

Large glass doors connect seamlessly to outdoor areas, allowing the interior to expand or contract based on weather and mood. A built-in reading nook offers a quiet retreat within the retreat.

Outdoor Terrace

How a Day Unfolds at Juli's House

You wake to the sound of wind moving through bamboo, not an alarm. Morning light filters through sheer linen curtains, casting soft geometry across the bedroom's white walls. You rise without urgency, open the glass doors, and step directly onto the stone terrace where the air still holds a trace of nighttime coolness.

Breakfast is a quiet affair: coffee brewed in the French press, fruit from the market in Canggu, perhaps eggs scrambled with chili and lime. You eat outside, barefoot, watching the garden's frangipani trees sway in the breeze. There's no schedule to honor, no checkout time looming. The morning stretches.

By midday you might drive to the coast, where black sand beaches meet powerful surf and the crowds thin out north of the main breaks. Or you stay, reading beneath the daybed canopy, the ceiling fan turning lazy circles overhead. Lunch is simple: grilled fish from the local warung, wrapped in banana leaf and still warm. You eat with your hands, as intended.

Afternoon is the house's quietest hour. You nap, or work if work calls, the villa's high ceilings and cross-breeze making air conditioning unnecessary. By four the heat softens, and you might visit one of the nearby rice terraces, walking the narrow paths between irrigation channels as farmers tend their plots with the same methods used for generations.

Evening is when the house reveals its full character. You prepare dinner in the open kitchen: market vegetables, fresh herbs, perhaps a whole snapper grilled with tamarind. You dine outside as the sky deepens from gold to violet, citronella candles keeping the insects at bay. Later, stretched on the daybed with a book or simply watching the stars appear, you feel the particular satisfaction of a day lived at its proper pace.

Frequently asked questions

What is the check-in time?

Check-in is at 3:00 PM, allowing time for thorough cleaning and preparation between guests. Early check-in may be available if there are no prior bookings; inquire at least 48 hours in advance. Juli or her assistant will meet you at the property to provide keys, walk through amenities, and answer questions about the house and surrounding area.

What is the check-out time?

Check-out is at 11:00 AM. Late checkout until 2:00 PM can be arranged if no guests are arriving the same day, subject to availability and a small additional fee. Please communicate your departure plans at least one day in advance so we can coordinate luggage storage if needed.

How many guests can stay?

The house accommodates a maximum of two guests. It was designed specifically as an intimate retreat for couples or solo travelers seeking privacy and space. The sleeping arrangement is one king bed in the primary bedroom; additional guests, including children, cannot be accommodated due to the property's layout and local regulations.

Is parking available?

Yes, secure off-street parking for one vehicle is included within the gated property. Most guests rent a scooter for mobility around the island, which can be arranged through trusted local operators. Car rental is also popular for guests planning day trips to Ubud, the northern coast, or eastern temples. The property's location on a quiet lane makes parking straightforward.

Do you accept pets?

Unfortunately, pets cannot be accommodated at Juli's House. The open-plan design, natural ventilation system, and outdoor living spaces make it difficult to ensure the safety and comfort of animals. Additionally, neighboring properties have resident pets, and we must respect the sensitivities of both guests and local animals.

How does direct booking work?

Direct bookings are made via email or inquiry form on this website. You'll receive a confirmation with payment details, typically a 50% deposit to secure the dates and the balance due seven days before arrival. Payment can be made via bank transfer or international payment platforms. Direct booking saves you the service fees charged by third-party platforms and often qualifies for flexible cancellation terms.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations made more than 30 days before arrival receive a full refund minus a 10% administrative fee. Cancellations between 14 and 30 days before check-in are refunded 50% of the total booking. Cancellations within 14 days are non-refundable, though the dates may be rescheduled once within a 12-month period subject to availability. Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all international bookings.

How can I reach the host?

Juli is available via WhatsApp, email, and phone throughout your stay. Response time is typically within two hours during daytime and by the next morning for evening inquiries. For urgent matters, a local assistant is available 24/7 and can reach the property within 20 minutes. Contact details are provided in your pre-arrival information sent one week before check-in.
